"South by Southwest was a blur," the feminine half of the newest minimalist blues
rock duo, The Kills admitted over a cocktail before her Monday
night show at San Diego's historic Casbah. The comment came from rocker
VV (Alison Mosshart), who recently flew from Europe to Austin, Texas'
South by Southwest music conference before launching a U.S. tour.
Expectedly exhausted from their recent country hoping HOTEL
(Jamie Hince), the other half of the band and VV preformed in
true rocker fashion. The Kills managed to tap into an uncommonly deep
vein of intensity throughout the entire show.
VV's guitar playing, singing, and stage wondering acrobatics
creatred a franticly entertaining stage presence juxtaposed with
HOTEL's measured focus, blended together producing a show well worth
the $12 cover. VV's distraught pacing on stage in-between songs was
as surprising as the switch she was able to flip once each song began
allowing her to perfectly deliver her musical contribution of vocals
and guitar.
Being 11:15 on a Monday night, the packed Casbah was clearly impressed
with the spewing sporadic energy flowing from The Kills.
As far as first impressions go, The Kills most definitely demonstrated
what should be looked for in a new band; intensity, creativity, and an
unpredictable flare, bordering on self destructive.
