Neutral Milk Hotel- On Avery Island
Well my background info on these kids is particularly slim, but their
other album In
the Aeroplane... is fucking great. I can't say enough about the first,
and sixth
tracks especially. Its perfect morning music, perfect late night music,
perfect
dog-days of summer music. With that said, On Avery Island has some big
shoes to
fill. At first listen one might say, I dig the crazy recording style, the
type of
effects used and the use of brass instruments, but the lead singers voice
is a
little sharp and perhaps even annoying. But that is the point, you have
to embrace
the fact that he is a normal guy with a kind of a silly voice, that just
so happens
to be able to write some great songs. Another great aspect about Neutral
Milk Hotel
is that both of their albums start quickly so you don't have to wait to fully
understand what their sound will be like. When you look at it that way
this band
should be right in your wheelhouse, a little eclectic, a little weird, but
who the
fuck isn't. They write solid songs, and no one else sounded similar to
them prior
to their existence. They are a solid group that everyone who digs that
classic
indie rock sound from time to time should have in their record collection.
So pick
up On Avery Island up and give it a whirl sometime.
Rating:7.3
Slay Factor: It just ain't that type of rock album sister, although 1 and
8 roll a bit harder then the others.
