We all get it; The Mars Volta is something extra-ordinary. We'll save the
obvious for the newspapers and get to the point. What makes this band so
special is, yes, the exploration of musical genres and interrelated stories
of the lyrics, but more than that, it is the depth of the experience.
In a generation when we are taught to endure the deception of our leaders
and make our paths along the predetermined directions of advertisers, this
band is true. They resist the artistically depriving categories of the
industry and brave self-expression. The Mars Volta are an inspiration for
us, and come at a time when we need something to trust.
The show last night at UCSD rocked. It was more than just the band and a
live performance. It was a privilege. As the Volta progresses on their
tour, they will inspire other cities. In fact, we all know that the next
time we see them in San Diego, it will probably be in a bigger arena, with
many more fans, and much more commercial exposure. Last night was a
sell-out crowd, but keep something in mind, being a sell-out doesn't happen
because of exposure. It doesn't happen when you're on the radio, or when
Mtv catches on. It happens when you sacrifice the values you stand for. To
the Mars Volta, you’ve got us hooked. The direction will be determined. I
thank the audience and the Mars Volta for making the experience true.
