BAND: The Rocket Summer
INTERVIEWER: Kelly Engle (KellyE@bandvibe.com)
INTERVIEWEE: Bryce Avary of The Rocket Summer
DATE OF INTERVIEW: 08.24.07

BAND MEMBERS:
Bryce Avary

BV: What were your themes behind your recently released CD “Do You Feel”?
Bryce: I definitely learned to say more. I felt that I had a better idea of what I was going to write this record about and that’s kind of like, basically for me, I was realizing that there’s just so many terrible things in the world and I’m not doing anything about it. I always want to, and say I’m going to, and then I never do cuz of my own issues. I just ended up writing a record. I went through some really bad times that I don’t ever really publicize or anything and I don’t know I sort of felt like I was pulled out of it supernaturally. There’s a lot of crappy things in the world. I wanted to make a CD that brings hope to people because I feel like that’s a huge part of The Rocket Summer and also with that inspiring people to help.

BV: What made you so passionate about music?
Bryce: I was like 12-years-old and I went to my friend’s house and he had a guitar and from that first day of picking it up I just never stopped. I started touring regionally when I was 18. I put out a CD when I was 16, but I was just in high school so I was playing a lot in Texas.

BV: What’s your best song to play live?
Bryce: I really like to play “So In This Hour” its on the new record. It’s the last song on the record. Lyrically I just love that song. It just seemed like a good ending song. The only thing that sucks about that is that you’ve got to wonder if people hear it.

BV: What do you wish someone would have told you before you started all this?
Bryce: I feel like I’m finally back to where I was when I started. When it was all about music. But, there was a time when it becomes like your job and how you like live and stuff supporting yourself and your significant other. What I would say to a new band is just to have fun. It’s a beautiful thing. Let it ride its course and see what happens.

BV: What are your plans now that Warped Tour is at its end?
Bryce: I know that we don’t have any time off. We have a 3-month tour with The Academy Is. In between we’re playing radio shows and we’re doing a Yahoo performance.

BV: Where did your band name originate?
Bryce: I was 16-years-old when I put out my first CD, which was a long time ago. And my friend was like you should name it, you know and he was reading a book called The Martian Chronicles and there was a chapter called Rocket Summer and he was like, “Name it The Rocket Summer,” and I was like, “Ok”. It was so casual and I’ve since then never made such a casual decision. Luckily, I think it’s a sweet name.

BV: What influenced you to write one of your most popular songs, “Brat Pack”?
Bryce: I wrote that when me and all my friends were riding around in my van, my tour van which is like where I live. Everybody was like getting to that point where they were graduating college. That moment where it’s like everyone gets real jobs and you start to lose friends. I just wrote that song. I didn’t realize it was going to become like our hit. It’s definitely like our hit song, which is so weird.

BV: What would you like to say to your fans at Bandvibe?
Bryce: Our fans are the coolest fans because they are like the sweetest people in the world. They’re all about like helping out, ya know. I don’t know it’s just cool.
