BAND: The Outline
INTERVIEWER: Christian Behl (Christian@bandvibe.com)
INTERVIEWEE: Graham, Ryan, Austen and Max
DATE OF INTERVIEW: 11.19.06

BAND MEMBERS:
Graham: Guitar, Lead vocals.
Ryan: Drums, Backing Vocals.
Austen: Keyboards, Guitar, Saxophone.
Max: Bass, Backing Vocals.

Christian: Looks like you guys have been busy on the West Coast with a couple of tours, and you’ll be heading into solid run through the Midwest, can you tell us what this current tour has been like thus far?
Austen: This was our first winter tour, so we didn’t really know what to expect. We’ve been driving through snowstorms, mountains all over, with blizzard winds, then the next day we could be driving through Arizona with 100 degree weather, wondering how we were freezing our asses off.

Christian: How has San Diego been in comparison to other cities on your tour?
Austen: We've played Soma a few times, its one of my favorite places.
Ryan: It's cool coming here because our home in L.A. is the Troubador, and this is like the Troubador of San Diego, we know people that work here.
Max: We've played big shows here, we played tiny shows, and everyone's always really cool.

Christian: How do you keep perspective during the tough times on tour or the slow times off tour?
Austen: We miss home, but we think of it as more of a vacation. We get to travel, we're in a new city everyday, and get to go to new restaurants, meet new people...
Max: Even if the shows aren't sometimes what you want them to be, the experience is always something new and different from what most people are doing...

Christian: Important lessons you've learned on tour?
Ryan: Lock the van and bring lots of extra socks and underwear, do not pack light, because it's very seldom that you have time to get to a laundromat.
Austen: Don't get too drunk before you go on to play.
Max: I say, bring Emergency, and get drunk before you play.
Austen: And take pictures..
Max: ...Yeah, take a bunch of photos.

Christian: What's something that would surprise your fans?
Max: We frequently cuddle in the van to keep warm..
Ryan: We travel with a fake prosthetic head in the van named Frank, that's something people probably don't know.
Graham: My middle name is Rad.

Christian: What's one lesson you've learned from being in a band?
Graham: Believe in the music you're playing. It's really unfortunate to see bands that aren't contributing anything worthwhile.

Christian: I saw the banner on your MySpace page to feed starving children, pretty cool, would you consider yourselves a band with a cause?
Graham: I don’t know if you could call us a band with ‘a’ cause, but we’re always trying to help where we can, like Music Saves Lives, which is awesome.

Christian: What's your favorite song to play off the new album?
Ryan: I love playing "Why We're Better Now" just because there's a very simple kind of slowed down rock beat.
Austen: My favorite song to play is probably a song we remixed on the album and made it more ubeat, dance-y and fun, it's called "In Light of Recent News."
Max: I always like "Aesthetics" just because it's the first song, and I'm always really pumped up and excited.

Christian: Graham, tell me about what motivates you to write with your lyrics.
Graham: Well, I try to branch out and just think of ideas, like "Why We're Better Now" is a song about the idea that the human species, if it wasn't for our capacity for self involvement and evil, wouldn't be the dominant species on the planet, so i try to write about interesting things when i can, so it's not always love, heartbreak, and whatnot.

Christian: Last question, Graham, if I gave you a Bandvibe guitar pick would you play with it?
Graham: Absolutely, well, if it was thin enough, I like 'em thin.

Also, Christian got the opportunity to interview Graham with a group of some of the band's favorite San Diegans and asked them to help out..

Question 1: When's your birthday?
Graham: My birthday is December 6.

Question 2: Were you in any social cliques in high school?
Graham: The awkward kids, (laughs) my high school was pretty small, so we were all just one big happy famiy. To be honest, cliques are overrated.

Question 3: Who is your favorite band of all time:
Graham: Does David Bowie count?

Question 4: What kind of toothpaste do you use?
Graham: Colgate Whitening with fluoride i think..

Question 5: If you got stuck on a deserted island, and could eat only one of your band members, who would it be?
Graham: Ahh, Ryan eats the fattiest foods, so he would probably nourish me for the longest period of time.
