BAND: Motion City Soundtrack
INTERVIEWER: Chris Hazel (chrish@bandvibe.com)
DATE OF INTERVIEW: 07.06.06

BAND MEMBERS:
Justin Pierre (vocal/guitar)
Matt Taylor (bass)
Josh Cain (guitar)
Tony Thaxton (drums)
Jesse Johnson (moog/keyboards)

Chris: How long ago did the band form?
Josh: In 1997 Justin, the lead singer, and I sought out some members to form a band. We got a few people that ended up not working out and then we got our current band members a few years later.

Chris: How did you come up with the bands name?
Josh: We threw around a few names, but naming a band is probably one of the hardest things to possibly do. My brother had made up a name for something he was goofing around with just as an idea and I asked if we could use it? He was like oh sure! So we took the name and he was cool with it.

Chris: How would you describe the bands unique melting pot?
Josh: We are all 90’s kids. So we grew up during the whole explosion of bands like Nirvana, the Pixies, and the Smashing Pumpkins. We come from that kind of background of music. Some dive onto different parts of it, but we are a melting of the early 90’s rock that we love.

Chris: Are there any bands currently playing that you would like to see your own fans get into?
Josh: There are a lot of great bands out there right now. There’s a band from the U.K. that I really like called The Maple State that we’ve taken on tour over a few time that I think our fans would like.

Chris: What would you say is the most negative aspect about your having your career taking off?
Josh: I don’t know if there is necessarily something other than there are a few fans that think we are selling out. There are a few fans that have with us from the begging that eel isolated and don’t the move we are making. We’ve always been doing the same thing and hopefully they will understand that we are just about making music and we wont to continue to do that.

Chris: What is it like playing in front of so many people at the Warped Tour?
Josh: It’s awesome, I mean some times its hot and the kids are barely hanging on and they can barely handle being there. But today in San Diego is a good day and there’s a lot of energy we feed off our crowd as you can tell from our live show.

Chris: Where has been the best so far at the Warped Tour?
Josh: Minneapolis our home town has been the most fun date so far. A few of the Texas dates have been really good too. It’s all been fun and still early in the tour.

Chris: What is the most thrilling and most rewarding part about touring?
Josh: It’s playing; it’s the thirty minutes to an hour we get to actually perform each day at the Warped Tour. It’s the only exciting part of the day.

Chris: Is there a song you enjoy playing live the most?
Josh: You know what? The Future Freaks Me Out is always going to stand as far as audience participation. It’s just an awesome and god way to end a set.

Chris: How important are the fans for you?
Josh: We’ve gotten no where other than with our fans. They are the only reason we get to do this.

Chris: Who would you chose to tour with for you dream team?
Josh: I would love to tour with the Pixies and Ben Folds. That would be a mind blowing tour!

Chris: What do you do when not touring?
Josh: I just put in a new bath room in my house the last ten days off. We usually don’t get much time off from touring and when we do it’s trying to catch up on normal life as much as possible.

Chris: Any plans after the Warped Tour?
Josh: I think we are going on tour with the All American Rejects at the end of the year from Southern coast to West coast and North West.

Chris: Have you guys ever thought about releasing as DVD?
Josh: We just release a DVD actually! The re-release of Commit This To Memory was made available about two weeks ago as a white covered deluxe version of the album that come with a three hour DVD with interviews, us goofing off, and a live performance. It’s our ghetto version of the Bullet In The Bible. I’m joking but I’d like more people to buy it just to get it out there and because it’s fun.

Chris: Do you have any advice for bands just getting started?
Josh: Be willing to give every ounce of money, time, and energy to do it or it’s just not worth it. Surround your self with people who are willing to give up their life to do this.

Chris: Where do you see the band in the future?
Josh: I’m hoping we are still making records and maybe touring just a little less. I would assume we’d be doing more concentrated touring instead of now which is always touring. I hope we get to still make music and people are still listening.

Chris: Any thing you wish to say to the fans of Bandvibe?
Josh: Thanks for coming out and supporting us!
