INTERVIEWER: Kelly Engle (KellyE@bandvibe.com)
DATE OF INTERVIEW: 08.24.07
BAND MEMBERS:
Shaant Hacikyan-Vocals
Jeff Czum-Guitar/Piano
Tom Falcone-Drums
Fred Cimato- Bass/Guitar
BV: How does it feel at this stage in your career to be on the Vans
Warped Tour and get to see your fans from all over the country?
Cute: Fucking cool. Any kid that might like our band, or any band on
the tour, they get the chance to see us. There are tons of kids there
every day so it’s always really fun.
BV: What do you think your band name says about your music?
Cute: A lot of people want to hate our music because of our band name,
but it’s kind of a given. We had it coming for us. We’re all hoping
that with the next record we’ll brake away from, “Hey we’re cute” and
start hopefully being respected. We’re proving a lot of bands and
people on this tour that we’re not just a “cute” band. I mean we’ll
always be Cute Is What We Aim For but we want to sort of reach new
fans, not just thirteen-year-old girls.
BV: Was it difficult to devote yourselves fully to the band when you
were previously a part of other groups?
Cute: We both left our old bands. Shaant and Jeff played in a band
together and Tom and I played in a band together. Shaant quit his band
and he was like, “Hey you want to come start this band with us?” I’ve
always been a fan of Shaant’s stuff so I was like yeah. I mean we were
both sixteen and we were like yeah let’s do it. So, we did it.
BV: Did the early criticism you received about alleged plagiarism and
your band name make your success now any sweeter?
Cute: Yeah definitely. People still talk shit about our band all the
time. I don’t care. We get on stage and there’s thousands of kids that
are watching us so fuck everyone who’s not watching us.
BV: Do you think that the drama that surrounds your bands adds to your
songs and your uniqueness?
Cute: Yeah one of the lyrics is, “I may be ugly but they sure love to stare”.
BV: Since you will be recording your new album soon, how are your
feelings different than your first time around and what can we expect
on the next CD?
Cute: We’re recording in January and we’re writing it next month
wherever we’re at. I was sixteen when I wrote some of the songs on our
record and you could tell. Now that I listen to it it’s like did I
really do that? I’ve listened to a lot more music. I know how to write
songs better. The next record’s gonna be fucking awesome. We haven’t
written anything, but it’s gonna be rad. We want to keep it Cute Is
What We Aim For. We want to keep it fun, fast, and in your face. It’s
just gonna be on a more mature level I guess.
BV: What advice would you give to bands suffering through the initial
drama you faced?
Cute: Say, “Fuck it!” Keep doing your thing, who cares what other
people think if it’s working, it’s working.
BV: What would you like to say to your fans at Bandvibe?
Cute: Thank you for reading this interview and hopefully we’ll see you
on the Fall Out Boy Tour.
