DATE OF INTERVIEW: 07.23.06

BAND MEMBERS:
Britt Black (lead vocals & guitar)
Howard (bass)
Dandy (guitar)
Daryl (drums)

Sarah: Lets get this out of the way, what’s the album and when is it out?
Britt: It’s called ‘Black out’ and it’s coming out the 25th, sometime next week.

Sarah: So How long have you been doing this now?
Britt: Well I’ve been solo for one year now, and I was in Biff Naked before that, and the band I started LiveonRelease for 5 years. That’s when I wrote the song ‘I’m afraid of Britney Spears’.

Sarah: I know that one.
Britt: It was one of those songs I hated playing, everyone knows it.

Sarah: Ahh the cheesy one that they all know and sing along.
Britt: Yeah, I guess that’s what happens when you write a song at 15.

Sarah: So who’s your favorite on this tour?
Britt: Joan Jett, I never really heard a lot of her before, and someone told me I kinda sound like her, so I gave her a listen, and she’s great.

Sarah: What’s next after warped?
Britt: We have the album, and the tour, we’re doing some stops in the U.K. And we have a battle of the bands in two weeks at the Roxy in L.A., the winner gets a big contract, bigger than mine, I almost want to see if I could try for it, but we’re just playing in it for fun.

Sarah: I like your tattoos on your arms, how many do you have?
Britt: I have 8, these say ‘Safe Return’ in Spanish, everyone thinks that your from Canada you speak French, I don’t know any, I know Spanish.

Sarah: How is Canada different from the States?
Britt: The food is way better, I love sushi and there’s this great place Miko, they have the best Inari, it’s all veggie, I’m allergic to seafood.

Sarah: So what are most of your songs about?
Britt: Mostly about relationships, Right before this album I broke up with a guy…

Sarah: Lets give him a name!
Britt: Ok!, ‘Norman’! That’s the name of my tattoo on my arm, It’s got a crown on it for my record label ‘Her Royal Majesty’. The break up gave me a good amount of ideas.

Sarah: What’s the writing process for an album like?
Britt: Well I got a Victor Grant from the Canadian government, they have deadlines. I didn’t even know they sent in an application for me, then they tell me I had a week to get it done.

Sarah: One week? Damn. You’re kidding right?
Britt: Nope. I just went down to the beach a lot and wrote, I wrote 13 songs, and we put 11 of them on the CD. ‘Jett Black Heart’ is the first single.

Sarah: What else have you done?
Britt: Well when I was 9 I went on tour with Biff Naked, and The Clut was on tour with us. At the time I was a Black Belt and Ian Ashbury was a Green Belt, and every morning he would bow to me. It was surreal, I was 9 and he’s this big rock star, bowing to me.

Sarah: 9? Wow. That’s rad. Do you still do karate?
Britt: No I quite when I was 13. I actually did dance when I was 4, but my dad knew some strippers that did ballet for years, so at 4 he took me out of ballet and put me in karate.

Sarah: Do you have any crazy tour stories?
Britt: I like the groupies, they get naked and let you throw lunch meat at them. It’s fun. I also saw a girl squat on a Corona bottle, then ask if anyone wanted to watch.

Sarah: No shit? That’s bizarre. On this tour?
Britt: Yeah, all I could think was what her parents must think.

Britt: Well I have a few more interviews to get done, It was great meeting you.
Sarah: It was great to meet you, I’ll catch you at 4 on the pink and black stage right?

Britt: Yep! Bye.
Sarah: Awesome! Bye!
