Q1. How did the band come up with the name Divided By Zero?
The band used to be called Ghoulspoon. When we changed a few members we decided to change the name. I was looking for a name that would be easy to remember and would express some meaning outside just being a band name. When you try to divide anything by zero on a calculator, it doesn’t know that it’s impossible so it comes up with an “E” sign. Therefore Divided By Zero = Nothing is Impossible.
Q2. How long has the band been together?
Ghoulspoon had been together for over 10 years. DBZ has been together since 2001.
Q3. In a nutshell, describe the style of your music.
We mix elements of metal, rock and reggae with catchy vocals and harmonies. I’d like to emulate the careers and originality of bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and System of a Down, but we don’t really sound like them.
Q4. What’s the best thing about being on stage performing in front of a live audience?
There’s no feeling like it. Having people sing the words to songs you wrote is an amazing thing. Besides, there’s not many jobs that give you free drinks.
Q5. What would you be doing if some reason you can not play music anymore?
Probably acting, comedy or art of some kind.
Q6. While being on stage performing, what is the most craziest thing you have seen a fan(s) do in front of you?
A drunken midget got naked one time. I also had to tackle somebody who got a little too rough in the pit.
Q7. Do you think new venues for “instant promotion,“ like myspace, make bands expect success to come a lot faster than it should?
Myspace seems to be taking bands to a higher level a lot faster than they used to go. It’s still so early in its development, it’s hard to say if it will last and if the cream will rise to the top. A few years ago mp3.com was the big thing and that’s already gone. We’ll see…
Q8. What do you do on your free time besides music?
I have to travel a lot for work, so I just got back from Vegas and I’m off to London soon. In my spare time I check out bands, go to the beach, read, write, play guitar, or go to movies.
Q9. You got signed by Sik World Records. How does that feel?
We just want to make an amazing record and hopefully it will get some recognition. Sik World has a great history of cool clothing and catalogs. They’ve always spent money on advertising and promotion so once those same principles are applied to the label, it could be huge. We may have a leg up on some other bands because we have that history and respect of an established company behind us. When we do the Sik World Records Tour this Spring, we already have a built-in following.
Q10. What should we expect from the new album of “The Black Sea Sessions” in 2006?
The album will be called “The Black Sea” and is slated for release in early March. You can expect a diverse record with super heavy parts, acoustic parts, even some sitar and keys. Lots of singing and catchy choruses mixed with amazing heavy riffs and beats. I think it’s the most cohesive and ambitious thing we’ve ever done.
